This House Is Not For Sale - You're Not Kidding, Bon Jovi
9:45 a.m.
I sit, poised at my computer watching the countdown on Ticketmaster waiting for Bon Jovi concert tickets to go on sale.
I, like so many other fans, have waited for this moment for three . . . long . . . years.
The clock turns 10:00. Tickets are now on sale. It takes me a minute to get my bearings on Ticketmaster, which wasn't the vehicle used for purchasing Fan Club tickets on Bon Jovi's last tour. My whole body is shaking with the stress and excitement of trying to be one of the first fans on to Ticketmaster with the hopes of getting an oh-so-coveted seat close to the stage. My fingers are trembling as I try to locate the perfect seats. Yeah, I'm in my mid-forties, and I know how ridiculous that sounds.
Unfortunately, however, it doesn't take long before the trembling stops as I realize I'm not going to be buying a ticket today. Not because I wasn't fast enough on the draw to get the seat that I wanted, but because ticket prices are so exorbitantly high this tour.
Let me put this in a bit of perspective for you. I've been married to the same man for 22 years. We're a middle class family, with three children who are involved in a lot of positive things through school and the community. All of those things cost money--a lot of it. I know this already, so I've spent the last year-and-a-half saving for this Bon Jovi tour. I've set money aside when I could, and truthfully, even when I shouldn't. I've said "no" to girls-night-outs, and that pair of jeans I wanted to buy, so that I could set aside even more money for this very tour. And truthfully, I've been happy to do so. I've done it before. There is nothing--NOTHING--like sitting close to the stage at a Bon Jovi concert. It has been my joy through the pain of saying "no" to other things that I wanted to do or have for the shining moment of purchasing these tickets. This isn't the first tour for which I've done this, and I've never regretted it.
Are the tickets really that much money that it's worth blogging about, you say? Well, for Bon Jovi's 2013 Because We Can tour, I went to two shows. I know that there are some of you who travel the world to see Bon Jovi, and I am truly happy for you. I, however, don't fall into that category, and frankly, there are many of us who don't. And I would like to think that we're not 2nd rate fans. I've listened to Bon Jovi since 1985, pre Slippery When Wet days. If Bon Jovi has released something, I've bought it. And yes, I see them when they tour. In fact, for those of us who have had to penny-pinch for these concerts, doesn't that show a level of dedication in some ways beyond those who don't have to save for each tour?
For the record, I am NOT trying to say that one type of fan is better or more dedicated than another. I would like to think that, for the most part, we are one big happy "family." I absolutely LOVE the FANTASTIC people who I have met through Bon Jovi, that I would not have met otherwise. And, yes. I do know people that get to do many Runaway Tours and travel the world to see Bon Jovi, and they're GREAT people. The point I'm trying to make, is that just because I and others like me can't go to as many shows as some, doesn't make us less of a fan or less dedicated. We just bank roll differently. LOL!
So let's get down to actual ticket prices. For the Because We Can Tour, in July at Soldier Field in Chicago, I purchased the Backstage with JBJ package for 4th row PIT for $900. It was pretty awesome. Aside from the fourth row tickets, we got things like a Bon Jovi bag, a journal, the backstage tour (the backstage tour is awesome fun), and a pretty sweet dinner/drinks party with other fans before the show. (I included a pic of me with Jon's white mic stand.) The same basic package for fourth row this year costs 982.75 (not including taxes and Tickmaster fees which will put the package over $1,000). Ok, so it's the same package with a bit of inflation. I can understand that. Also, there is not PIT this tour. That's OK. I get that things change.
Here's where I take issue. Fourth row through 15th row for this tour is the Silver package, which carries the $982 price tag. That's pretty steep the further back you go.
For the Because We Can tour, I also purchased a 5th row Fan Club PIT ticket only (without the package) for the October Chicago show for approximately $400. This is the type of ticket I planned on purchasing this tour, understanding that there would probably be a bit of an increase in price. These type of tickets have been available to fan club members for some time. Unfortunately, there is no option this tour for a floor Fan Club ticket without the package. The closest ticket a Fan Club member can get without a package is for lower bowl, starting at $375. If you'd like to purchase a 4th row ticket, without a package, and you're not using the Fan Club, but just using the presale, a 4th row ticket will cost you $1050. WHAT? Seriously? What happened to work for the working man, Jon?
I have saved for and planned on spending anywhere between $500-$800 on a floor ticket without a package for a good seat somewhere in the fourth to sixth row. Which, based on tickets for past tours, was a reasonable amount to figure, even with planned inflation.
You may think I am just some big complainer/hater. Not so.
I absolutely LOVE Bon Jovi. I am a fan. I am also a consumer.
Bon Jovi is a band, which is a corporation, of which Jon Bon Jovi is the CEO.
If I, as a consumer, feel that I am unhappy with something, I have every right to speak out and say so. It is the American way. It is the Bon Jovi way. We weren't born to follow . . . .
At best, I feel snubbed by the band that I love, that I have sacrificed for . . . .
I have not purchased a ticket yet for this tour. I will not sit in the back or in the side bowl. I don't enjoy myself in those seats. I am not complaining, I am simply making my voice heard on this issue.
If you feel the same, please feel free to share this blog.
Better still. Make your own voice heard. Call, email, tweet Bon Jovi. Please do so with respect, but please do so.

I am a 27 year member of the fan club and was absolutely floored yesterday as I tried for 45 minutes to purchase ATL tickets. Floored!! Mad!!! Hurt! I finally quit trying. But then went back. FINALLY pulled seats NOT in the 3rd level (as I wanted ticket only, not paying the package prices)and purchased lower level, about 10 rows up from floor straight in front of the stage for $193 each after taxes and fees. I know it is going to kill me to be in those seats come February but at home in tears is no fun either. I understand you completely and I thank you for putting it so elequently into words. I will be sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI am feeling your pain, Chantel! I am glad you got tickets, but I am sorry to hear that you didn't get the seats that you were hoping to get. Thank you for your kind words, and I so appreciate you sharing this blog! I think that it's important for us all to start being heard!
DeleteI completely agree with everything you said!!! If you are poor I guess you don't count to see them. I was so upset. I got tickets but spent half my Christmas money to do it.
ReplyDeleteI would like to think that "regular" people still do count. I wonder if JBJ has been wealthy for so long that he's lost perspective on what "regular" people can afford (not that I'm denying him any of his success). My hope is that if enough of us begin to say something, we can turn the tide.
DeleteThank you for commenting.
You are a little late to the party, but I am glad you used your blog to share what many of us have known for years ... sat out the last tour and will do so this tour, as well. A message to JBJ - just Because YOU Can, doesn't mean you should.
ReplyDeleteExactly right.
DeleteI TOTALLY agree with you. I was a Bon Jovi fan since the beginning. Went to every tour but after all the petty crap that went on in 2013/14, I said goodbye to the band I loved for 30 years, which was really sad. Can't even listen to their music anymore. Jon's ego is through the freaking roof now. If he really cared about his fans, he would fight with the record label to keep the prices reasonable. Sorry, they haven't had a decent record in years and NO ONE, I said NO ONE is worth that kind of money. Guess Jon has to pay for all that free food he gives away at his restaurant somehow. Agree with me great, don't agree with me, I really don't care.
DeleteI totally agree with you, i'm from Brazil and due to our not favor change right now, it got absurd! If even for you who earn your money in american dollars, imagine to us. I could be able to attend the last tours there in America 2012/2013 and also Europe in 2011 but now it's almost impossible.
DeleteI do imagine that is very hard, and I feel your pain with you. I hope you are ultimately able to see them perform this tour.
DeleteThank you so much for commenting.

DeleteHey Tina! I know who you are from FB. I am friends with the ever lovely, Diane Duncan! I don't see completely eye to eye with you, but I very much respect your opinion. I still love Bon Jovi and still hope for better. I'm glad the conversation is started.

I agree 100%. We, as fans and consumers have to step back and say no. I am 57 and have been around since the Brotherhood Tour days when the mom's ran the fan club. You may feel like you just can't miss a tour but when you wake up the day after the show you didn't pay a fortune for, everything is still the same and you still have YOUR hard earned money. I love them but I think they somehow have changed like their music.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very interesting perspective. I am still wrestling with what I am ultimately going to do. You're right. Life will go on, and truthfully, although Bon Jovi is my favorite band, the money I saved would go a long way toward good seats and even meet and greets for other bands that I enjoy.
DeleteThank you for your comment!
I love music. All kinds of music. I have been going to concerts since 1970. I have even met a few musicians. Most concerts are memorable. While I agree/disagree with the comments, none have hit my nerve. June 1984 was the first time I had ever heard of this band. I dragged my kids to events to win front row/back stage or even just to have a conversation. Even took my Gbabies on an adventure or two. Drove hundreds of miles to see them. I have met the most incredible people from all over the world because of this band. I have the best friendships and hope to keep them. But I cannot support nor promote a band who no longer thinks of the fans first. The very fans who gave them the amenities they have become accustomed to. The last three years have left me with a broken heart. I won't see them on this tour. I won't listen to their new album. I have moved on. Thank you for letting me comment. BTW all of my souvenirs are packed away.
ReplyDeleteHi Diane,
DeleteI have also met the most incredible people through music, especially through Bon Jovi. I wouldn't trade that for the world.
I appreciate your opinion. I'm glad this conversation is being held openly. I think a lot of people are frustrated. I hope that one day you can unpack your souvenirs and enjoy them once again.
Thank you for popping over to read my blog and for commenting.
Very well written and expressed Erica.
ReplyDeleteI too am sickened and horrified with the prices and packages this tour. As a CEO who loves to give back to his community through JBJ Soul Foundation and the Soul Kitchen I'm ashamed that he is allowing this type of price gouging to his truest and faithful fans by his brother Matt. Matt is in control of the pricing along with the concert/ticket promotors.... Matt's paycheck is when Jon is touring and there are concerts or runaway show events.
I've been to a couple of Runaway events and have had some very special times and great access and seats. The new Runaway packages that are a part of the tour dates are the same price as before but you don't get a GREAT seat to the show. You get a seat starting behind row 15.... Behind the Ticketmaster and FC packages. How crazy is that???
I'm still debating on sitting this tour out because I don't want to give into this gouging, but also realize that it doesn't matter to Jon or Bon Jovi because someone else will pay it, which is sad.
Where is the bands loyalty to its fans of 25+ years? We've been loyal to them for years and we're repaid with this?? A $1585 front row seat ticket??
Where's Mrs B when you need her? She needs to smack both Matt and Jon upside the head and tell them to appreciate the fans and take care of them better than this.
Hi Red Riding Hood,
DeleteI know each band sets their own prices for their tours. And I was under the impression that Matt is in complete charge of Runaway Tours, but I haven't heard that he sets the prices for BJ tours too. You may be spot on and I just haven't been privy to that info.
I would personally be SO UPSET if I paid for a Runaway Tour and was behind row 15! The unfortunate thing is that if these tickets are selling well, it doesn't matter what we think or say. The question is, is how many fans have they simply priced themselves to high for and that can't or won't buy a ticket now? If enough people can't/don't buy tickets, then they'll be forced to reconsider. It's all a numbers game.
I also would never suggest to anyone not to buy a ticket. I just know what I'm willing and not willing to do.
I was devistated when i saw the prices. I'm a teacher and took a second job at our local college so i could buy tickets. Sadly, it's not going to happen. And fan club should always get priority over others. I purchased 5th row outside the circle onthe last tour with the dinner prior for $400. I ended up being right on the rail. They have ticketmaster ticket holders behind me a special wristband to stand up at the rail. I ended up going up there anyway. Those same tickets this year are double w/o ticketmasters fees. Priced me completely out of it as i cannot bear the thought of sitting in the nose bleeds. Thankfully he held my hand at that last show. It might have to lay me a lifetime l. :(
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
DeleteMy heart breaks for you! That is dedication...taking a 2nd job for ticket money. I'm glad he held your hand. I'm sure it was a beautiful moment.
I have been a BonJovi fan since the beginning and have only seen the band TWO times first time in 2003 in Tinley Park, Il. and the second time in 2013 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Nosebleed section both times. This year I decided to join the fan club in hopes to get closer seats. When I joined they had not yet announced the tour dates. I was disappointed there was nothing in Illinois. I agree with you about the ticket prices. I wish they were more affordable! Makes me sad that I probably won't be going to a show this tour.
